Three Games to Watch
Florida State (-10.5) at Georgia Tech (Dublin, Ireland) | 11 am CST | ESPN | The first game of the new year will occur in Ireland. Florida State is coming off an undefeated regular season and looking to prove it wasn’t a fluke. Though the Seminoles lost nine players in the NFL Draft from last season (six going in the first three rounds), they are looking to return to dominance in the conference. The defense was stellar last year and should be able to reload. On offense, they will be breaking in a new QB, though it is long-time journeyman DJ Uiagalelei. Georgia Tech finished .500 last year, earning a bowl game and winning it to finish the year. QB Haynes King is back, and the offense should continue to improve. Still, the Seminoles have enough firepower to win this neutral-field game.
Montana State (-12) vs. New Mexico | 3 pm | FS1 | This is an excellent opportunity to watch one of the best FCS teams in the country. Montana State has a fun offense to watch and one of the better defenses in the FCS. Though the Bobcats are double-digit favorites, don’t be surprised if New Mexico puts up a fight and even wins this game. The head coach in Albequrique is Bronco Mendenhall, who abruptly ‘retired’ from Virginia in ‘21 after returning them to respectability. There are innate challenges with the Lobos, but if anyone can turn them around, it’s Mendenhall.
SMU (-25) vs. Nevada | 7 pm | CBSSN | SMU joins the ACC this year and flies to Carson City to take on the Wolf Pack. The Mustangs won 11 games last year and should be able to compete in the ACC. Head Coach Rhett Lashlee has a high-caliber QB in Preston Stone, a former four-star recruit, and the offense can be explosive. Defensively, Scott Symons is a name to remember. The young DC is a rising star in the profession, and his defensive scheme aligns with some of the top minds in football. Former Texas co-DC Jeff Choate takes over Nevada. He’s the former Head Coach at Montana State and knows the region. SMU shouldn’t have trouble with the Wolf Pack, but come to watch good schemes on both sides of the ball.
