2-man schemes have been a popular way to attack 3rd Downs. The Fangio system has three tags that allow the Safeties to play using their zone tools while the rest of the defenders play man.
2-Man coverage has never been a call that has been used at volume, but it does have a place in a defensive coordinator's call sheet. In Cover 1, the defense can keep a linebacker, Safety, or a D-linemen as a “rat.” The “extra” player in the coverage can cut crossers or spy the QB. The defense loses that extra “spy” when they run 2-Man.
