EPA & Success Rates
» The Chargers are starting to make their move…

—
Who’s the best?
Overall EPA: Chargers, Broncos, Vikings, Bears, Lions
Success Rate: Jets, Chargers, Broncos, Texans, Titans
Dropback EPA: Broncos, Bears, Chargers, Lions, Vikings
Dropback Success: Jets, Chargers, Bears, Texans, Broncos
Rush EPA: Chargers, Steelers, Vikings, Ravens, Chiefs
Rush Success: Ravens, Vikings, Broncos, Chargers, Jaguars
How does this compare to DVOA (FTN)?
Overall: Vikings, Texans, Lions, Chiefs, 49ers
Pass: Vikings, 49ers, Lions, Bears, Chargers
Run: Vikings, Chiefs, Ravens, Texans, Titans
Conclusion: When looking at defenses from a ‘raw’ perspective, the Chargers are the best unit in the league. If looking at it through the DVOA lens, the Vikings still have a stranglehold on the top spot. One interesting note is that the DVOA model really likes the 49ers' defense, which is in the top 10 in most EPA/Success categories.

» Green Bay, Miami, and Seattle are completely different defenses on 1st versus 3rd Down.
Coverage Usage
Cover 0: The Raiders and Chiefs run ‘max’ coverage on ~10% of their snaps, and both are top 10 in EPA.
Cover 1: Aaron Glenn finally has the secondary to play man as their primary coverage, and they are good at it, too. Safety Brian Branch is having (another) All-Pro year.
Cover 2: The Vikings are the best Cover 2 team in the NFL when you factor in usage and EPA.
Cover 3: Panthers, Steelers, and Colts. Rinse and repeat. Only the Steelers are positive in EPAl from that group.
Quarters: Seven teams are over 20% in usage in the NFL. Only two are negative in EPAl: Vikings and Chiefs, which is surprising.
Cover 6: The only teams not Fangio-adjacent or from the Baltimore tree are the Bills and Jets, who have added this coverage family to their repertoire.

I'm a bit confused by the NFL Coverage Usage Behind Pressure table.
I initially assumed it was the percent of time that coverage is used when blitzing, but a lot of teams coverage usage adds up to well above 100% and that doesn't make sense to me (though there could be a good reason why that I might not know about).
Then I thought it might be how often they blitz when using that coverage, but that would also mean a bunch of teams are using cover 0 without sending pressure way more often than I would have expected.
So I definitely think I am missing something here and figure it was best to just reach out and ask.
Also, I really appreciate these weekly data downloads! Especially since I don't believe there's a site that exposes this to consumers (at least none of the ones I pay for do) and it's all incredibly useful!
