The 2025 New Orleans Saints defense might have been some of Brandon Staley’s best work. Once seen as a defensive contemporary to the wonderkids of Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, Staley crashed and burned in LA, as the Chargers could never get off the ground under his leadership.

Staley took a year's “sabbatical” from calling defenses and worked under Shanahan in 2024 as an assistant head coach and defensive assistant. The move gave him a fresh perspective on what went wrong in LA, reset his ego, and gave him a front-row seat to what makes a modern offensive genius uncomfortable.

Staley, along with his mentor Vic Fangio, is credited with starting the NFL’s Two-High Revolution in 2020. With limited experience, McVay hired him in 2020 to raise the floor (and ceiling) of the Rams' defense while providing a daily challenge as LA retooled its offense.

With a “second chance” in New Orleans, under the bright offensive mind of Head Coach Kellen Moore, Staley would again attempt to implement one of the most influential schemes in football. With a refreshed mindset, Staley approached an aging front seven and a young secondary with an install strategy ultra-focused on individual techniques.

Unlike his tenure in LA, where a common criticism was his overreliance on scheme, Staley focused on building a solid technical foundation rather than massive playbook volume. That focus is what created one of the best defenses in the back half of the year.

After a Week 14 win against the Buccaneers, Staley explained his year-long “slow burn” process, and in reflection, everything worked out the way it was supposed to:

“[W]hen you're trying to install a philosophy and install a scheme... and you're not getting the results early... Have you learned over time to be like don't try to just put a quick band-aid on it? We're installing something for the long term and it's going to play out in month three, month four.”

One of the hallmarks of the Fangio system is a reliance on sub-packages that feature complicated coverage checks. The philosophy within the system is that coverages are used to solve problems, not pressures or front structures.

To be complex in the backend, a defense needs a stable of DBs; thus, the reliance on Nickel. But the package can run most of its structures from Base, which is a force multiplier in today’s offensive climate, as teams “cosplay” heavy packages only to pass the ball.

A Pivot to Base

Last season, the Eagles finished fourth in Nickel usage at 75% of their plays; New Orleans finished 23rd at 58% (FTN). That departure from a stylistic philosophy was mostly focused on matching personnel to the Saints’ opponents.

For context, in Staley’s last year with the Chargers (‘23), he only ran Base personnel on ~23% of his plays. That year, the league average was 21%. In ‘25, that number jumped to 27% league-wide, and Staley more than doubled his Base usage this past season.

When teams used 11-personnel, the Saints mostly responded with Nickel. Alontae Taylor (Titans) moved inside, and rookie Quincy Riley took over at Field CB.

Against 12- and 13-personnel, Staley chose to stay in Base (3-4), a decision that runs counter to what NFL defenses typically want to do, as more teams look to live in Nickel. But for most teams, the problem is personnel; there just aren’t that many “Star” Nickels who can line up near the box and cover premium receivers in the slot.

Staley used his Base personnel to counter early-down, heavy-personnel run games. For the Saints, the pivot to more “Base” was a stabilizing force against heavy personnel. Against 12-personnel, the difference in EPA/rush was wide when compared to Nickel. Staley wasn’t willing to pay that “Nickel Tax” often conceded by modern defenses.

• Success Rate Allowed (+EPA%): 35.8% | Rank: 15th

• Defensive Stops: 86 | Rank: 5th

• Tackles for Loss or No Gain (TFL+NG): 24 | Rank: 5th (PFF)

While the overall run metrics hovered near the middle of the NFL, their execution metrics were elite due to the volume at which they played Base personnel. The Saints finished the season ranking fifth in Stops (zero or negative plays) and net TFLs. Being able to stop the run efficiently allowed Staley to focus more time on the coverage aspects of his defense, which are the literal engine of the system.

In 2023, Kansas City’s Super Bowl run relied on an elite secondary (5th in Passing DVOA) that masked a poor run defense (27th). By 2024, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo corrected course, leveraging hybrid personnel to raise the level of the run defense (9th in Run DVOA), but dropped to 17th against the pass.

The structural constant across both seasons was heavy Dime usage (~24%), anchored by a Safety room of Bryan Cook (Bengals), Chammari Conner, Jaden Hicks, and Justin Reid (Saints). When Reid departed for New Orleans ahead of the 2025 season, Spagnuolo dialed back the Dime usage to ~8%.

Most pundits focus on the pressures “Spags” brings to the table each week. Rightfully so, over the last three seasons, KC ranks ninth in Blitz Rate at 30%. Under his leadership, Kansas City has been at the forefront of modern pressure design.

Prior to Brian Flores heading to Minnesota, it was the Chiefs that led the league in Quarters or split-field pressures. But it is his use of personnel and a mixed bag of defensive formations, coverages, and pressures that make this defense hard for opposing coordinators to figure out.

Kansas City runs the most diverse scheme in the NFL. No other team runs as many calls and looks as the Chiefs. Above, the NFL’s “diversity” of scheme is illustrated through Shannon entropy, a mathematical measure of randomness. Spags is willing to use any tool necessary to stop an opponent, and though it doesn’t always produce an elite unit, the defense plays well in complement to the Chiefs’ usually elite offense. 

2025’s Odd Stack Evolution

With Reid gone, Spags evolved into a more traditional Nickel defense. Typically, the split between a traditional 4-2 Nickel and his 3-3-5 isn’t that large, 30% versus 24%. But in ‘25, the numbers shifted overwhelmingly into more traditional looks with a 42% to 13% split.

2025 was a year of transition for the unit, but the diversity within the Odd Stack package remained. Though it was used in limited numbers, the Chiefs were very targeted about its use. The Giants, Jaguars, and Broncos all saw high numbers of the 3-35 package, primarily to counter their spread-run offenses.

The catalyst for this system was Leo Chenal (Commanders), who could line up anywhere from a Wide-9 to a “flex” 3-technique in any given package. KC’s Odd Stack carried PFF’s second-highest run grade and run Success Rate, using Chenal and Drue Tranquill as leverage defenders near the line of scrimmage.

With no fourth Safety, Kansas City had to transition to more traditional looks, even in their Odd Stack package. Typically, the Chiefs on early downs, when implementing the package, used a “Penny” or 5-1 alignment, as illustrated above. Unlike other high-volume Penny users, the Chiefs use their off-ball LBs as the Edges.

Spagnuolo’s Odd Stack package in ‘25 ranked eighth in Blitz Rate, matching KC’s overall blitz volume. 20% of those were Quarters pressures. Only the Cardinals and Vikings exceeded 10% usage.

Though 2025 was not a successful season for any KC unit, Spags demonstrated how he uses non-traditional packages to get into traditional looks. These “curveballs” can throw coordinators off when presented with different defensive formations. Then, on 3rd Downs, switch again, running “standard” pressure paths, but from an Odd Stack look.

Matt Patricia’s first season in Columbus has to be viewed as a success as the veteran coach maximized an NFL-rich roster. Ohio State arguably had one of the best defensive units in 2025, both talent-wise and in on-field production. The Buckeyes led the FBS in Points Per Drive (PPD), Yards Per Drive (YPD), and were in the top-five in almost every advanced metric.

Heading into 2025, many around the program were hesitant to get behind the defunct former NFL coach. The last time Patricia had any success leading a defense was in 2017, as the New England Patriots' defensive coordinator under Bill Belichick.

The public “divorce” between head coach Ryan Day and Jim Knowles was well-documented and centered on the perceived complexity of the Buckeyes’ defense. With Knowles gone, Day wanted to pivot to a “simpler” style of play and adopt an NFL model.

Patricia was unemployed and provided Day with the name of a former NFL coach. As noted, the roster was also loaded with high-caliber NFL talent. The Buckeyes’ defense under Patricia was player-centric, and the veteran coach simplified his system to allow his defenders to flow freely to the ball.

Player Personnel

Ohio State’s defense was a standard Cover 3 model, based in Nickel (4-2) for much of the season. Patricia used his elite hybrid players, LB/ED Arvell Reese (Giants), LB Sonny Styles (Commanders), and Safety Caleb Downs (Cowboys), to create different presentations for offenses to contend with. Downs spent ~65% of his snaps near or around the box, with Reese splitting his time between being an edge rusher and “box” linebacker.

The main defensive “formation” the Buckeyes utilized was a “Penny” alignment, or 5-1 defensive structure. Reese would be moved around the edge of the box depending on the matchup and call.

Typically, the hybrid off-ball ‘backer would play to the boundary, but at times, Patricia used him to the TE’s side. The “Mike” linebacker, Styles, played ~80% of his snaps in the box. Patricia used these three players to create a triangle, leveraging the offense.

Three total Buckeyes came off the board in this year’s NFL Draft, with two more, iDL Kayden McDonald (Texans) and CB Davison Igbinosun (Bills) selected in the 2nd Round. Patricia had the key pieces for a dominant roster, with a star player at every key position.

Patricia’s “Pivot”

During his tenure with Detroit, Patricia had an affinity for man coverage. In his three seasons with the Lions, his defense led the NFL in Cover 1 usage at 37%. On the surface, it looked like Day was trying to roll back the clock and reestablish the Buckeyes as a man-dominant scheme.

Patricia instead leaned into Cover 3 (38%), which they ranked 34th in usage among FBS teams. Belichick’s system in New England was typically man-heavy, with Cover 2 as the change-up. Patricia flipped from man to zone, which is a modern trend in the league, and still used Cover 2 (17%) as a high-volume change-up (14th).

With high-caliber talent, Patrica didn’t want to “lock” his athletic players into designated roles, but allow them to move as “adjusters,” utilizing zone on ~72% of his calls. In typical NFL fashion, blitz numbers were not high (54th), and Pass Blitz Rates were even lower (71st).

Arizona’s defense is an exercise in “schematic survival.” By pairing a positionless secondary with an outmatched front, Nick Rallis has built a system that relies on “passive pressure” (mental) rather than physical dominance. Being schematically unique is not something many defenses strive for in the NFL, but in Arizona, it wasn’t an option.

The league is notoriously close-knit and copycat. Though the Jonathan Gannon era ultimately wasn't a success, it provided the league with one of the best examples of innovation born of desperation (i.e., a lack of talent). 

Most pundits and fans alike were a little shocked that the organization retained Nick Rallis. Arizona interviewed multiple candidates, including Gus Bradley (former Colts DC), Aubrey Pleasant (former Rams PGC), Dino Vasso (DBs/Texans), and Karl Scott (Seahawks PGC).

None of the names listed were ultimately hired, with Bradley, according to SI’s Albert Breer, choosing “to go to Tennessee with Saleh, despite a richer financial offer and the opportunity to call plays in Arizona.” Scott, another high-profile candidate within the division, also turned down the opportunity, returning to Seattle.

Ultimately, outside of Bradley, no candidate had actually called plays in the NFL. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted about Rallis’ retainment, explaining, “[Arizona] wanted playcalling experience. Rallis brings that and continuity.”

Innovation Born of Desperation

There were high hopes in the desert for much-needed defensive improvements within the NFL’s most unique defense. Edge Josh Sweat was acquired from the Eagles, along with Dalvin Tomlinson (Browns), and the ageless Calais Campbell (Dolphins), to assist in the growth of 1st Round draft picks Walter Nolan III (‘25) and Darius Robinson (‘24).

In the backend, Will Johnson was scooped up on the 2nd Round; a player that many had as a 1st Round prospect. All things were pointing north for a defense that was in serious need of a talent injection. Then the injury bug took a massive bite out of the roster.

Nolan, the draft class's centerpiece, started and ended the year on IR. In the secondary, Nickel Garrett Williams and CB Starling Thomas were out from the start. Even with a disjointed beginning to the season, the Cardinals were holding steady as the 16th-best defense in EPA and the ninth-best run EPA.

But by Week 8, Arizona was 2-5. They’d win one more game, Week 10 versus the Cowboys, and sputter to an 0-9 finish. Both sides of the ball played poorly, but Rallis stabilized the defense at times with his unique scheme, especially on 3rd downs before Budda Baker was injured late in the season.

Rallis ultimately had to protect a young CB room and win consistently with an outmached front. For the Cardinals, this was nothing new and exactly what the defense’s design was built to handle. Arizona’s strength comes from its “positionless” secondary, in Baker, Jalen Thompson (Cowboys), and Dadrion Taylor-Demerson.
